(posted 1/22/12) Meetings in Sublette County January 26 & 27 Researchers at the University of Wyoming are conducting an interdisciplinary study to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of management strategies at reducing the level of brucellosis in elk. To do this, the researchers need to model how a reduction in the level of brucellosis in elk relates to the decreased risk of brucellosis transmission to cattle.
To create these models, researchers need to gather information on where elk and cattle are throughout the year. This information will be gathered via herd plan questionnaires/surveys that have been/will be mailed to cattle producers within Sublette, Lincoln, and Sweetwater counties.
Cattle producers will be asked to share information from their completed herd plan questionnaires, and/or to complete a survey. Dr. Brant Schumaker and graduate student Mandy Kauffman will be holding informational meetings in Pinedale on January 26th at 6pm at the old Pinedale Elementary School (currently BOCES) library and at the Marbleton Town Hall on Friday Jan 27th at 12:00pm to talk more about what the survey entails, how the information will be used, and how the results of the study will help area producers.

Jackson, Lander, Pinedale/Cora, Alpine, Big Piney/Marbleton, Evanston, Mountain View, Lyman and Park City, Utah are in final preparations to host the dogs as they race through town, and Wyoming’s Uinta County has expanded its race participation, offering two stages on Thursday and Friday.
"Uinta County, including Evanston, Lyman and Mountain View, has been a fantastic supporter of the IPSSSDR," says Race Director Frank Teasley. "We are thrilled about the second day we will have in Uinta County."
Following the Alpine stage on Wednesday, February 1, mushers will drive to Evanston for a Meet and Greet BBQ at the Roadhouse. The next morning, on Thursday, February 2, they will race from Deadhorse Trailhead, south of Mountain View, with a finish at North Slope Road. With its unique stage stop format, the IPSSSDR has become a popular mushing event attracting the world’s top competitors.

The IPSSSDR Jr. Stage Stop will take place Saturday, February 4, at 2:00 p.m. in Park City, Utah, after the final stage of the IPSSSDR. Participating students volunteer in their communities to earn the right to compete in the kids’ race. (A list of participating students and fact sheet about the race follows this release.)
Each of the host communities for the International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race is eligible to send two students to represent its town in this short exhibition fun run. Alternate students are chosen to fill vacancies as available. In order to participate in the race, students agree to perform 10 hours of community service work prior to the race and donate $25 to the nonprofit Uinta County Community Youth Coalition.
The Jr. Stage Stop program was launched in 1999 by International Stage Stop co-founder Jayne Ottman and Jackson Hole Musher Maria Hayashida to broaden the goals of the IPSSSDR, and to improve the status of youth in Wyoming communities statewide. The Jr. Stage Stop provides an opportunity for youth participants to increase their self-esteem, social competency, community involvement and to experience philanthropy.
Students do not need their own dogs or previous mushing experience to participate – equipment and dog teams are provided by the IPSSSDR. The 2012 Jr. Stage Stop is coordinated by the Uinta County Sled Dog Race Committee. The Uinta County Sled Dog Race Committee, Abby Chamberlain, Andy and Heidi Spray, Angie Fessler, DuWayne Jacobsen, Kay Evans, Lisa and Troy Bradshaw, Lisa Silcox, Natalee Legault, Paul Knopf, Penny Robbins, Lynn Pahl, Marian McLean, Jessica Parkyn, Joe McFarlane and Terri Arnell, all worked together to organize race details.

(posted 1/3/12) Bob Comey, Bridger-Teton National Forest Avalanche Center Conditions are dangerous out there. Steep slopes that were so unstable that they were releasing naturally or on approach may be gaining enough stability that people will be able to get out upon them and then trigger them. Be careful!
A few upgrades to our network of automated weather stations are described as follows:
The Geospatial Science and Engineering Team at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) have completed an update to the graphic display of the data from our five highest wind stations. This wind graph display is available in the weather station sub-menu of our weather and snow data pull down menu (http://www.jhavalanche.org/graphs/a_weatherAll.php). The upgrade has switched the wind direction arrows in the graph 180 degrees so that the arrows point away from the direction of the wind instead of towards the direction of the wind. The y axis scale has also been added to the right side of these graphs to make these graphs more friendly when viewed from smart phones. We still have a few issues on this part of this upgrade so your patience is appreciated. Several other backside improvements not visible to the user have also been added. Thanks to Mike Connolly and his team (especially John Koudelka) at INL for these upgrades and their participation in our program.
Our new Commissary Ridge weather station is up and running. This station is located at an elevation of 9,300 feet and provides temperature, snowfall and wind data from the south end of the Salt River Range. The location of this station is designated on the google earth display of the avalanche events map section of our website. The station icon on this map has links to the data from this station. The purchase and installation of this station was funded by a Recreational Trails Program Grant that was obtained in partnership with Wyoming State Trails Program. This station is located in complex avalanche terrain that is very popular with local and regional snowmobilers. Members of the Star Valley Search & Rescue Group have volunteered to assist in the operation of this station.
The new Freds Mountain wind station is also operational and has just been equipped with a new temperature and humidity sensor. This station is located at the top of Freds Mountain at Grand Targhee Resort and was purchased and is being operated by the resort and their ski patrol. An icon on the avalanche event map section of our website delineates the location of this station and provides links to the station data.
The data from both of these new stations is posted in our 24 hour weather station data sheet every morning by about 5:30 AM and is being added to other areas of our website.
In addition to the new weather station upgrades we have also added new observation forms to our website. There are now two forms for your use that are accessible though the contact us menu of our site. The avalanche observation form has been upgraded to allows the observer to use google map technology to designate the location of the avalanche event they are reporting and to upload photographs of the event. Size and resolution requirements for these photos are specified.
There is also a form for daily field observations and a location on the website to view these observations. This is a new form with a format that is under development. At this time form focuses on current conditions and avalanche warning signs. If necessary, use the comment section of this form to provide a brief statement if you need to expand upon the observation information provided.
Field observation are submitted to the center, reviewed and then posted on our website in the field observation section of the site for all users to view at http://www.jhavalanche.org/observations/viewObs
Your patience is appreciated as these new forms get initial use and evolve.
Stay safe and enjoy the new snow.

Big Piney, Wyoming, "Ice Box of the Nation"
|
Ice Box of the Nation Big Piney is the oldest settlement in Sublette County, Wyoming and was named by Dan B. Budd for the Piney Creeks. In 1879, Daniel B. Budd and his partner Hugh McKay brought a thousand head of cattle from Nevada hoping to ship them at Point of Rocks, but winter caught up to them here in the Green River Valley. The following year Dan Budd moved his family here and that is how the settlement of this town began. Big Piney was called "Ice Box of the Nation" when it was officially made a weather station in 1930. Big Piney had the coldest year round average temperature of any place nationally.
It's a curiosity, considering most Wyoming towns are few and far between, that Big Piney and Marbleton would only be a mile apart. They have separate post offices and town governments. Big Piney was incorporated on July 5, 1913. In the early days there was a lot of drainage problems with the site on which Big Piney was built. So Charles Budd, eldest son to Dan B Budd had hope to build the town up on the bench to alleviate this problem. Charles did establish Marbleton on the bench, in late 1913, but it never replaced Big Piney. Any attempts to combine the two towns has been unsuccessful. The truth is people here kinda' like it that way. Both towns cooperate with each other, they have a common school. The citizens of these two towns take a lot of pride in the growth of their little metropolis over the past years and think the founders would be proud too. Both communities have thrived in the last several decades because of the oil and gas industry. In the 1980's Marbleton recieved it's own post office, because of the number of people moving to the area.
The Sublette County Ag Center is an indoor arena used by county residents for 4-H programs, ropings, youth rodeo, barrel racing, horse shows and much more. It is located at the Fairgrounds, north of Big Piney and Marbleton on Hwy 189.

Meeting is to talk more about what the survey entails, how the information will be used, and how the results of the study will help area producers.
